Tipping Point Film Fund

This ethical co-operative works to raise money to fund films that advance public debate.

As a new, sustainable source of funding, the Tipping Point Film Fund will reach out to filmamkers and audiences from all walks of life.The fund will enable film-makers and activists to harness the power of people and film to make change. Funding non-fiction films that expose the truth about the global issues of our time; TP will ensure the creative independence of films that will play a pivotal role in putting pressure on people with power.

Co-operation & Democracy

Education officer Erica Kyere explains what is unique about the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana.

Her job entails going out into the villages, meeting the farmers and trying to find out what problems they face at a village level. With 45,000 farmers – democracy is important to the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative to make sure everyone gets their voice heard. One man one vote, sharing equitably, she teaches the farmers these values.

Getting an Education

Her father is a cocoa farmer for Kuapa Kokoo, who have built many schools – primary and secondary, as well as bore holes for drinking water. She wants to be a nurse in the future to help her members of her community if they become sick.

The Recorder

The farmers elected him to be a recorder to sample the cocoa to quality control it. Over the years he has earned the trust of the villagers. They produce good quality cocoa, and by bringing it to the Kuapa Kokoo shed, they know that not only will they be paid on time, but will receive a bonus.

Empowerment for Women

Five Years of Fairtrade Chocolate

In 2002, The Co-operative switched their chocolate range to Fairtrade. This decision changed lives.

The success of the Fairtrade/ Co-operative relationship has enabled Kuapa Kokoo to provide their farmers with clean water, schools for the local communities – and because the schools have modern facilities, they can attract teachers to the communities who would otherwise be less inclined to work there due to the remote nature of the schools.

Cocoa – The Full Benefits

Nicholas Adjei-Gyan describes some of the social improvements gained through Fairtrade.

Nicholas Adjei-Gyan’s role as Head of Research and Development at Kuapa Kokoo, is to train the farmers, educate them, and make sure they comply with Fairtrade standards. Through improving the farmers’ reliability and efficiency, the whole community can benefit. Kuapa Kokoo have invested in many social facilities such as clean water, schools, day-care centres, mobile clinics and further income-generating projects to help the farmers make ends meet between cocoa harvests.

Cocoa – The Process

Erica Kyere explains the process from seeds to weighing for the Kuapa Kokoo farmers.

It takes up to three years from when the seeds are planted in the forest until they become harvestable trees. The pods are cut down, collected and taken to be split for the cocoa beans inside. After fermenting and drying the beans are ready to be taken to the Recorder to be weighed and sold. A film from The Co-operative.
